Vermont Business Magazine This Labor Day Weekend, the picturesque town of Bennington, Vermont will not only transform into the aromatic hub known as “Garlic Town, USA”, but also showcase its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness. While celebrating garlic and agriculture, the producers are taking steps to ensure the festival leaves a minimal carbon footprint, highlighting Vermont's dedication to both its community and the environment.

"Garlic Town, USA is more than just a celebration of our beloved garlic; it's a testament to the resilience and vitality of our local economy and our environment," commented Matt Harrington, Executive Director of the Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce. "Beyond the economic boost it provides, we're immensely proud of the sustainable steps we take each year, ensuring that our town thrives not just economically, but environmentally as well."

Key sustainability features of the festival include:

Transportation Initiatives: Patrons are encouraged to park in designated areas outside of downtown, with Green Mountain Express providing frequent shuttles, reducing the carbon footprint and congestion in the main festival area. Tractor Rides are also provided throughout the downtown to encourage “hay ride sharing.”

Local Vendors: Highlighting locally sourced products and foods, reducing the carbon cost associated with long-distance transportation of goods and supporting the local grow economy.

Waste Management: Increased efforts in waste segregation, recycling, and composting, ensuring minimal waste goes to the landfill. An innovative solution in the world of festivals, Garlic Town provides waste stations that are volunteer led to separate trash, recycling and compost components. Last year the festival was able to successfully recycle over .82 tons of trash, .60 tons of food waste, and .59 tons of recycling thanks to their incredible team of volunteers and vendors.

Banned Materials: All vendors are made aware of the strict rules of the green festival in order to keep our state green and beautiful! Specifically banned material at the festival and statewide include plastic bags, plastic straws, and styrofoam. This continues to support the eco-friendly mission of the festival.

Eco-awareness: Through collaboration with local eco-warriors and organizations, the festival aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable agriculture and practices in daily life.

The festival celebrates the rich tapestry of local produce vendors, artisans, and the enduring spirit of Garlic Fest throughout Bennington. With a keen focus on sustainability, the Garlic Town festival sets the stage for a brighter, greener future for all events in the region.
